Rapid Population Growth Slowing National Progress: Minister

ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb Khan has warned that the country’s development efforts are being held back by fast-growing population pressures.

Speaking at a Population Council event, he stressed that Pakistan cannot achieve sustainable economic growth unless population trends are brought under control.

The minister explained that an expanding population strains national resources, increases poverty, and creates long-term social and economic challenges. He said governments must plan according to population size, and rising numbers make this increasingly difficult.

The finance minister noted that Pakistan’s economy is currently moving in a positive direction, but population and economic management are “interlinked challenges.” He emphasized that balanced population growth is essential for stable, long-term economic progress.

He also highlighted climate change as another major concern, saying the government is focusing on building an environmentally friendly economy. He added that unplanned informal settlements (katchi abadis) create further complications due to the lack of reliable data.

He reiterated that managing population growth is key to improving the pace of national development.
