UNITED NATIONS: President Donald Trump warned global leaders that recognizing a Palestinian state would be “an enormous prize for Hamas,” as he delivered a combative address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.
In a wide-ranging speech lasting nearly an hour, Trump accused the UN of failing to resolve international conflicts, criticized recent moves by powerful nations to recognize Palestinian statehood, and demanded the immediate release of hostages held in Gaza.
Palestinian Statehood Debate
Trump declared that recent recognition of Palestine by several nations amounted to a dangerous concession. “Recognizing a Palestinian state would be an enormous prize for Hamas’s atrocities,” he said. He urged member states to reject unilateral recognition, warning it would prolong conflict and embolden militants.
The U.S. president also accused the UN of doing little to address such disputes. “The United Nations has not even tried to solve these conflicts,” he argued, stressing that only decisive action, not statements, could bring peace.

Criticizes UN’s Effectiveness
Earlier in his address, Trump questioned the purpose of the UN itself. He mocked its reliance on “strongly worded letters” that lacked enforcement. “Words do not stop wars. Action does,” he insisted. He said the assembly had failed to deliver on its “tremendous potential” and instead offered empty gestures.
President Donald Trump delivered a sharply critical speech at the United Nations General Assembly, warning global leaders that their countries are “going to hell” due to mismanaged immigration and climate policies.
Hostages and Gaza Conflict
Turning to Israel’s war against Hamas, Trump pressed the UN to demand the release of hostages in Gaza without delay. “Those who want peace should unite behind one message: release the hostages now,” he said.
Trump repeated his call for a ceasefire-for-hostages deal that would secure the return of all captives, both alive and dead.
Threatens Tariffs on Russia
On the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump vowed to impose “a very strong round of powerful tariffs” if Moscow refused peace. However, he warned that sanctions would only be effective if European nations imposed similar restrictions.
He has considered penalties against countries that continue business with Russia, including buyers of Russian oil.
Diplomatic Meetings Planned
Trump planned a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy later in the day to discuss the conflict and explore potential ceasefire arrangements. He also confirmed talks with Gulf leaders on Gaza’s reconstruction and long-term stability.
Casting himself as a peacemaker, Trump suggested his record in ending conflicts made him worthy of Nobel recognition.
Jabs at UN Infrastructure
Mixing policy with personal grievances, Trump mocked UN facilities. He recalled a stalled escalator that nearly caused First Lady Melania Trump to fall and a malfunctioning teleprompter. “These are the two things I got from the United Nations — a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” he quipped.
Divided Reactions
Trump’s address drew sharp responses worldwide. Critics called it combative and short on actionable diplomacy, while supporters praised its direct tone and emphasis on hostage safety.
The remarks reinforced Trump’s transactional approach to international diplomacy — pressing allies to act, warning against concessions to Hamas, and demanding accountability from the United Nations.
