UNITED NATIONS: The rejection of a Russian draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza by the UN Security Council is a disservice to the cause of world peace for which the world body was established.
While innocent people are being killed in the Israeli air strikes on Gaza, the UNSC itself should have come up with action to stop the madness to save human lives.
But it was unfortunate that the western powers sabotaged the efforts initiated by Russia and Muslim members of the council.
“The most urgent need at this stage is a ceasefire,” said Ambassador Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN.
“It is, therefore, disappointing that the Russian draft resolution, which called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, was not adopted,” he told a state news agency.
The final vote on the draft was five in favour (China, Gabon, Mozambique, the Russian Federation and the United Arab Emirates), four against (France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States), and six abstentions (Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, Malta and Switzerland).
Pakistan, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Lebanon, Yemen, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkiye, Bangladesh, Maldives, Mauritania, Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea and Mali. Zimbabwe, Nicaragua, and Venezuela were the co-sponsors of the Russian resolution.
