KARACHI: Torrential rains in Karachi and the overflowing of Thado Dam have triggered severe flooding as the Malir and Lyari rivers burst their banks, sending water surging into residential areas.
The release of water from Thado Dam’s spillway intensified the flow in Malir River, inundating parts of Scheme 33. Floodwaters also submerged sections of the M-9 Motorway near Jamali Bridge, prompting the Sindh government to breach a central barrier on the highway to divert the flow.
In Lyari River, rising waters swept into densely populated neighborhoods including FB Area, Shafiq Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal UC-1, Goharabad, Hasan Naumani Colony, Sohrab Goth, and Issa Nagri. Homes were inundated and residents trapped as several feet of water accumulated.
Rescue 1122 teams evacuated dozens of people, including 15 children, four women, and an elderly man from Lassi Para. Another 12 residents, among them nine children, were moved to safety from Shahbaz Goth.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab described the situation as “challenging,” urging citizens to stay indoors. “Both Malir and Lyari rivers are flowing like raging torrents.
Water levels remain dangerously high as discharge from Thado Dam continues,” he told Geo News during a visit to the affected areas. He also dismissed social media reports of flooding in Saadi Town as false.
Meanwhile, light to heavy rain continued across the city, and authorities have forecast another spell in the coming hours. The Korangi Causeway has been closed to traffic due to rising water. Schools citywide remain closed as a precaution.
