Zardari, Sharif renew pledge to protect rights of minorities

Minorities’ Day observed to acknowledge contributions of our minorities towards Pakistan’s development.

ISLAMABAD: Political leaders and government authorities on Sunday expressed their resolve to ensure the protection of the rights of minorities in the country.
The national minorities day is observed on August 11 every year. On Aug 11, 1947, father of the nation Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah had delivered his historical speech in which he had spelled out the duty of the new state to protect the rights of all citizens irrespective of their religious affiliations.
However, with the passage of time, minorities in Pakistan have faced discrimination on the basis of their religions. Though the constitution guarantees full protection and independence to them to practice their faith, certain groups have attacked their places of worship with impunity.
In his message on the occasion, President Asif Ali Zardari said Pakistan was committed to ensuring the protection of religious, social, political and economic rights of its minorities.
“Pakistan celebrates Minorities’ Day on 11 August every year to acknowledge the contributions of our minorities towards Pakistan’s socio-economic development.”
“On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to the promise made by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, on 11 August 1947, to the country’s minorities to protect their rights and religious freedoms.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif felicitated the minorities and said that the government was committed to welfare of the minorities.

He said the government of Pakistan was taking practical steps for the welfare of the minorities. The allocation of special seats, besides employment opportunities on merit for the minorities, spoke volume about the provision of equal opportunities to all, adding minorities’ representation in all institutions were being appreciated.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sardar Ali Amin Gandapur acknowledged the invaluable contributions of religious minorities to the development of Pakistan stating that Islam strongly advocates for the protection of minority rights and equality among all individual.

In his message, the Chief Minister highlighted that Pakistan’s Constitution guarantees social, political, religious, and economic rights to all citizens, regardless of caste, creed, or color. This day reflects our nation’s commitment to equality, diversity, and the protection of minority rights.

He maintained that his government is dedicated to ensuring equal opportunities and respect for every individual, regardless of their background. The Chief Minister reiterated the importance of celebrating the rich diversity of cultures, religions, and traditions that characterize our society.

“We are committed to creating an environment where every minority community can thrive, contribute, and play an essential role in our collective progress. Our policies and initiatives are designed to address the unique challenges faced by these communities and promote their empowerment,” he stated.
