RAWALPINDI: Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry has dismissed speculation that Field Marshal Asim Munir will assume the office of President of Pakistan, calling such claims “completely baseless.”

In an interview with British magazine The Economist, the DG ISPR clarified that there has been no discussion about President Asif Zardari stepping down, nor is the Army Chief interested in or seeking the presidency.

Addressing a question on Pakistan’s potential response to any Indian military action, Lt Gen Chaudhry warned: “This time, we will start from India’s east, beginning with deep strikes inside Indian territory. India must understand it can be targeted anywhere.”

A few weeks earlier, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated on social media that the authorities are fully aware of those orchestrating a campaign against the President, Prime Minister, and Army Chief, and the motives behind it.

He emphasized that neither the President’s resignation nor any plan for the Army Chief to assume the presidency is under consideration.

PPP Parliamentarians Secretary-General Nayyar Bukhari also rejected speculation against President Zardari, reiterating that he is the country’s duly elected head of state and that such rumors are unfounded.
