Russia Offers Mediation To Ease Pak-Afghan Tensions

Spokesperson says stability in region key priority for both Russia and wider international community.

MOSCOW: Russia has offered to help Pakistan and Afghanistan reduce their growing tensions, becoming the second major regional country after Iran to step forward with a mediation proposal.

In a press briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova emphasized that stability in the region remains a key priority for both Russia and the wider international community.

She described Pakistan and Afghanistan as important partners for Moscow and warned that continued border tensions between the two neighbors threaten the security and stability of the entire region.

Zakharova stressed that only sustained dialogue can lead to a durable solution. She urged both countries to remain calm, avoid actions that could escalate the situation, and stay committed to diplomatic engagement.

According to her, constructive and consistent reconciliation efforts can create the conditions needed for long-term peace.

Iran recently made a similar appeal for mediation. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held phone conversations with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, expressing Iran’s readiness to support any initiative that promotes peace between the two sides.

Diplomatic sources say the Iranian and Pakistani foreign ministers discussed bilateral relations, regional developments, and several international issues.

Iran also conveyed serious concern over the rising tensions and reaffirmed that it is prepared to help both Pakistan and Afghanistan pursue dialogue, reduce hostilities, and move toward stability and reconciliation.
