ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has decided to club all petitions filed against lifetime disqualification and hear them in the first week of January 2024.
The decision was made in the written order issued in the case of Mir Badshah Qaisrani filed against lifetime disqualification.
The court order made it clear that the pendency of the case cannot be used to delay the general elections schedule for February 2024.
It said the matter should be fixed before the bench formed by a SC committee as the attorney general had pointed out that any petition related to constitutional matters should be taken up by a bench comprising at least five judges.
It may be mentioned here that the Supreme Court had a few years ago disqualified former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for lifetime in the Panama case.
Though parliament has now fixed disqualification of any politicians at a maximum of five years, the apex court ruling is intact and can only be overruled by the Supreme Court itself.
