Supreme Court upholds Musharraf’s death sentence

Special court had ordered in its 2019 ruling to arrest the ex-dictator and hang him.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed a set of appeals against a special court judgement to hang former military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf till death in the high treason case against him.

The apex court upheld the special court ruling after rejecting the appeals.

“The impugned passed on January 13, 2020 by the Lahore High Court (LHC) […] is not sustainable and accordingly set aside,” the court order announced by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa stated.

In January 2020, the Lahore High Court had declared the special court’s sentencing of Musharraf in 2017 as illegal.

The appeals were filed by the late military ruler and others. The special court led by the late chief justice of Peshawar High Court Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth was formed by the PML-N government (2013-18).

The special court in its ruling had directed law enforcers to apprehend Musharraf, then currently receiving medical treatment in Dubai, to ensure the death sentence was carried out.

But if found dead beforehand, “his corpse (should) be dragged to D-Chowk, Islamabad, Pakistan, and be hanged for three days”, it said.
