Senate, NA sessions today, more legislation expected

ISLAMABAD: The Senate and National Assembly are meeting today and are expected to start process for more legislation.

The upper house will meet at 6pm while the session of the lower house will commence at 4pm.

Besides, legislative business, both the houses will discuss matters of national and international importance, state media reported.

The government is expected to introduce in both the houses new bills aimed at consolidating its grip on different issues. There are also reports that the government will introduce a bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court from the current 17 to 25.

The bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court can be passed by a simple majority. Critics say that the government wants to increase the number of judges by inducting its favorites. 

Under the 26th constitutional amendment recently passed by two third majority of both the houses, the criterion to appoint the chief justice of Pakistan has been changed. The new chief justice of Pakistan was appointed under the new law.
