LAHORE: Heavy flooding in Punjab has caused widespread destruction, submerging crops and inundating villages, leaving seven people dead and three missing.
Authorities reported that the release of water from India has led to dangerously rising levels in major rivers, including the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej. Roads have been submerged, and the flooding has affected several districts.
In the Gujranwala Division, seven fatalities were reported: three in Gujrat, two in Sialkot, and two in Narowal. Additionally, three people went missing in Sambahrial, Sialkot.
The Ravi River has risen significantly at Shahdara, creating a high-level flood risk, with water flow reaching 125,300 cubic feet per second (cusecs).
Lahore’s commissioner warned that a massive flood surge of up to 160,000 cusecs could occur, though the river’s maximum capacity is 250,000 cusecs.
All relevant authorities are on high alert, with evacuations ongoing in nearby areas, and district administrations fully prepared to manage the emergency.
