WASHINGTON: A powerful snowstorm has wreaked havoc across the United States, claiming at least 65 lives in weather-related incidents and severely disrupting daily life, according to American media reports.
Large parts of the eastern United States are experiencing extreme cold, with temperatures plunging below freezing. Chicago recorded temperatures as low as –14°C, while –11°C was reported in Cleveland.
The severe weather has also impacted southern states; heavy, intermittent snowfall in Tennessee and Mississippi has left more than 100,000 consumers without electricity.
Air travel remains badly affected following the storm. On Wednesday alone, American Airlines canceled 653 flights, while 1,077 flights were delayed. Operations at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport were also severely disrupted due to snow and freezing rain.
In response to staff shortages caused by the harsh conditions, American Airlines has reportedly offered double pay to crew members willing to work additional shifts.
The US National Weather Service has warned of strong, icy winds in New York and New Jersey, forecasting that the intense cold spell is likely to persist into next week.
