ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and key PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has resigned from the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) after developing differences with the government over import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Azerbaijan.
Sources told News Diplomacy that Abbasi was against the import of the cheap fuel from the Central Asian country through the state-owned Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL). He was of the view that the LNG should be imported through a private company of Pakistan. However, the petroleum division refused to prepare the required summary on the direction of Mr Abbasi.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his recent visit to Azerbaijan signed a number of agreements including one on import of LNG from the Central Asian country. Under the agreement, Baku will provide cheap LNG to Pakistan every month.
