ISLAMABAD (PR): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday called for joint efforts to ensure peace in Afghanistan for stability in the ECO region and beyond.
Mr Sharif was addressing the SCO summit held at the capital city of Qazakistan in the presence of head of states and governments from member states. He said that the member states should help the interim Afghan government in overcoming issues in the war-torn country.
The prime minister said that his country would always work with other states to strengthen SCO in order to achieve its objectives of peace and prosperity in the region. Mr Sharif added that the SCO countries possessed human and socioeconomic potential that can ve exploited for the overall good of the peoples.
He also stressed the importance of need for formulating a mechanism aimed at using national currencies for mutual settlement within the SCO region.
Mr Sharif, on the occasion, welcomed the SCO agreement on environment protection and said Pakistan remains committed to working with other nations to offset the challenges of climate change.
He also expressed deep concerns over the continuing war in Gaza and the Israeli atrocities against Palestinians. The prime minister urged the SCO to play its role in stopping the war and rehabilitation of the displaced people of Palestine.
He was of the opinion that the establishment of a Palestine state on the basis of pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al Sharif as its capital was the only solution to the crisis.
Leaders from Russia, China, Turkiye and other countries were also scheduled to address the summit.
