Sheikh Rashid arrested again in May 9 case

Police take Awami Muslim League chief after court dismisses his bail in arson attack case.

RAWALPINDI: Awami Muslim League chief and former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed was on Tuesday arrested once again in the May 9 violence case.

On November 3, Rashid was granted bail in the arson attack case. The Waris Khan police in Rawalpindi had booked Sheikh Rashid, an ally of jailed former prime minister and PTI chief Imran Khan, under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.

Today, an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi cancelled the bail after which he was arrested by the police. Two days ago, the AML leader had expressed the fear that he might be arrested. However, he had said he would contest the election from jail and would win

It may be mentioned that the former ally of the AML, the PTI has fielded its own candidates against Sheikh Rashid and his nephew in two National Assembly seats of Rawalpindi.

In the 2018 elections, Sheikh Rashid had won the seats after the PTI didn’t field any candidates from the constituencies.

On May 9 and 19, PTI supporters went on a rampage after their party chief Imran Khan was arrested by NAB in a corruption case in Islamabad. He was released three days later by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The PTI supporters mostly targeted military installations, including the GHQ in Rawalpindi and the corps commander house in Lahore.

Being an ally of the PTI, the AML chief though supported Imran Khan, he condemned the violence and said on that day he was out of the country.

Earlier, he was picked up and kept in an undisclosed place for 32 days by security personnel. After return, Sheikh Rashid said he was on a 40-day Chilla (meditation).
