Sheikh Rashid granted bail in May 9 case

Lawyer says former interior minister has nothing to do with the case as he was abroad at that time.

RAWALPINDI: A court in Rawalpindi on in Monday granted bail to Awami Muslim League chief and former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in the May 9 violence case. 

The Waris Khan police in Rawalpindi had booked Sheikh Rashid, an ally of jailed former prime minister and PTI chief Imran Khan, under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. 

When Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Malik Ejaz Asif took up the case for hearing today, Sheikh Rashid along with his lawyer appeared in the court. 

The defense counsel said that his client had nothing to do with the case as on May 9 he was out of the country. 

He said there was neither any witness nor any other evidence to prove that Sheikh Rashid was involved or had any role in the violence. 

The judge accepted the plea and granted bail to the veteran politicians with a direction to submit surety bonds worth Rs50,000.

The court also granted bail to the AML chief’s nephew and former MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafiq till October 8 in the same case. 

On May 9 and 19, PTI supporters went on a rampage after their party chief Imran Khan was arrested by NAB in a corruption case in Islamabad. He was released three days later by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. 

The PTI supporters mostly targeted military installations including the GHQ in Rawalpindi and the corps commander house in Lahore.
