WASHINGTON: Tension marked India’s Independence Day celebrations in the US capital as hundreds of Sikh protesters surrounded the Indian embassy.
The demonstrators waved Khalistan flags and chanted slogans including “Down with India” and “Modi the killer.”
Khalistan Council chief Dr. Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu told reporters that thousands of Sikhs will gather in Washington on August 17 for the Khalistan referendum. He said the struggle would continue until Indian Punjab is freed and Khalistan established.
Protesters staged a sit-in outside the embassy for several hours to vent their anger against the Indian government. Indian officials did not issue any response but security at the venue was further tightened.
