Sikhs protest outside UN headquarters as Modi attends Yoga Day event

Protesters say Modi govt under Hindutva mindset considers India as a country of Hindus alone.

NEW YORK: A group of Sikh community members protested as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended an event at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York held in connection with the International Yoga Day.

While the event was ongoing at the UN headquarters, the Sikh protesters gathered outside and chanted slogans against Modi and his BJP government back home.

The protesters said that human rights were being trampled in India at the behest of the Modi government and minority religious communities such as Sikhs, Muslims and others had been pushed to the wall by the government through the use of extremist organizations.

The protesters said the Modi government considered India as the country of Hindus alone as it had been working on this line under its of Hindutva mindset. 

As a result of these injustices, the protesters said, Sikhs were demanding a separate country of their own with the name of Khalistan.

The protesters were also carrying the flags of Khalistan Movement. 

Besides the protest, the Sikh community members also displayed on TV screens at public places in New York the Indian government’s atrocities on the minority religious groups in India.
