KARACHI: The Sindh government has removed Mohammad Iqbal Detho from his position as Chairperson of the Sindh Human Rights Commission over allegations of harassment against women.
According to official sources, the Sindh Human Rights Department has issued a formal notification confirming his dismissal under the provisions of the Sindh Protection of Human Rights Act, 2013. The removal followed formal approval from the Sindh cabinet.
The decision came after an internal investigation conducted by a subcommittee of the Sindh cabinet, which looked into the allegations of misconduct. Based on the subcommittee’s findings and recommendations, the cabinet formally moved to strip him of his position.
Detho had originally been appointed to the role with the Sindh Cabinet’s approval, and his tenure was noted for his previous contributions to human rights advocacy. However, in light of the serious nature of the accusations, the government proceeded through official legal channels before taking disciplinary action.
The administrative control of the Sindh Human Rights Commission has now been transferred to the Sindh Human Rights Department, which will oversee the commission’s functions until a new chairperson is appointed.
Detho’s dismissal marks a rare instance of a senior provincial official being removed from office due to alleged misconduct. The case has reignited discussions about accountability, ethical leadership, and the role of human rights institutions in upholding standards they are meant to protect.
