KORDOFAN: At least six Bangladeshi peacekeepers serving with the United Nations mission were killed in a drone attack in Sudan, according to UN officials.
The attack took place on Saturday at a UN mission base in the Kordofan region. The drone strike resulted in the immediate deaths of six Bangladeshi personnel, while six others were injured. Officials said that four of the wounded are in critical condition, and all injured personnel are also from Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s interim chief Muhammad Yunus strongly condemned the attack and urged the United Nations to provide immediate and comprehensive medical assistance to the affected peacekeepers. He also expressed condolences to the families of those killed.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also denounced the attack, stating that targeting UN personnel is unacceptable and may constitute a war crime under international law.
The Sudanese army has blamed the attack on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a rebel group engaged in ongoing conflict with government forces. However, the RSF has not issued any official response so far.
Sudan has been gripped by intense civil conflict for more than two years, resulting in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of civilians.
