Supreme Court grants bail to Imran, Qureshi in cipher case

Both PTI leaders told to submit surety bonds worth Rs1 million each.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday granted bail to former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the cipher case.

A bench headed by acting chief justice of Pakistan Sardar Tariq Masood directed the two PTI leaders to submit surety bonds worth Rs1 million each. The ruling was passed on a petition filed by the two in the case.

The court order stated that there were no evidence that the former prime minister disclosed contents of the cipher to give benefit to any other country. There was also no evidence of violating section 5(3) of the Official Secrets Act, it added.

The court also nullified the direction of the Islamabad High Court to complete the trial of the cipher case by the special court in four weeks.

A special court formed under the Official Secrets Act has already indicted Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the case. The judge is conducting trial in side the Adiala jail where the two are imprisoned.

Earlier, the Islamabad High Court had declared illegal the jail trial but the authorities expressed their inability to produce Imran in outside court citing security concerns.
