ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has achieved a notable decrease in its pending caseload following ongoing judicial reforms, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi said.

During the past three months, 3,600 new cases were filed in the apex court, while 5,383 cases were disposed of, reducing the total number of pending cases to 34,083.

The announcement was made during the 10th review meeting on Supreme Court reforms, which evaluated case management, case classification, digitization of records, and IT integration. Officials also reviewed measures taken to improve public facilitation services.

Special attention was given to serious criminal cases during the period. The Chief Justice praised the improved disposal rate and effective case management.

Pending death penalty cases have seen a significant drop, declining from 384 in October 2024 to just 60 at present. It was decided that all pending death penalty appeals will be scheduled for hearings within the next 30 days. Moreover, cases filed up to 2018 will be prioritized to eliminate the backlog.

The Public Facilitation Center provided services for approximately 20,802 requests in the last three months, the officials added.

Chief Justice Afridi emphasized the need for modern technology adoption across the judiciary to further enhance efficiency and streamline processes. The meeting was attended by officials including the Federal Ombudsman and the Secretary of the Law and Justice Commission.
