Torkham border reopens for cargo vehicles after 10 days

Pakistan and Afghanistan agree that from April 1 no cargo vehicle driver will be allowed to cross border sans documents.

PESHAWAR: The Torkham border between Pakistan and Afghanistan was opened on Tuesday for cargo vehicles after remaining closed for 10 days.

Earlier, officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed at a meeting in Peshawar that cargo vehicle drivers will be issued travel documents by March 31 abd from April 1 no driver will be allowed to cross the border from Afghanistan without travel documents.

After the understanding was reached, the first cargo vehicle crossed into Pakistan from Afghan side on Tuesday morning.

The officials said that Pakistan took the decision on November 1, 2023, not to allow any cargo vehicle driver to enter Pakistan from Afghanistan without having travel documents issued by Pakistan.

When this decision was implemented, the Afghan regime decided to close the Torkham border on their side on January 13.

As a result, trade between the two countries through the Torkham border remained suspended causing billions of rupees loss to both the nations.
