Trade Stopped, Terror Continues From Afghan Border: Fazal

RAWALPINDI: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman strongly criticised Pakistan’s Afghanistan and foreign policies, saying that while no trade benefits are coming from across the border, terrorism continues to spill into Pakistan.

Addressing a JUI youth convention in Rawalpindi, he remarked, “Not even a single pomegranate comes from Afghanistan, but terrorists are coming.” He questioned the effectiveness of Pakistan’s Afghan policy over the past several decades and said the public has the right to ask why relations with successive Afghan governments have failed.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that if militants are entering the country, the state should take decisive action, asking, “If terrorists are coming, who is stopping you from killing them?” He also criticised the lack of a consistent security policy on the western borders, pointing out that each new military leadership adopts a different approach—sometimes favouring talks, other times military action.

The JUI-F chief further alleged that Pakistan currently lacks effective governance and state authority, warning that continued instability, weak security, and poor economic conditions are pushing the country in the wrong direction.

He reiterated that his party would not support what he called an illegitimate government but would cooperate on any genuinely positive initiatives taken in the national interest.
