Trump Cancels Obama-Era Climate Policy, Sparking Global Concerns

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has annulled a significant policy decision made by former President Barack Obama, generating widespread global concern.

According to international news agencies, President Trump has completely reversed a major climate change policy and introduced a new framework, one that marks a sharp departure from Obama’s approach.

In 2009, former President Obama established the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which classified greenhouse gases as a threat to public health and welfare. Based on this decision, the U.S. introduced several federal regulations aimed at reducing carbon emissions, including stringent rules for vehicle emissions.

However, President Trump has now rolled back these regulations, arguing that eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy will boost the U.S. economy. According to the government statement, relaxing environmental regulations will make vehicles more affordable, with the auto industry set to benefit from a reduction in costs of up to $2,400 per vehicle.

The White House administration has described Trump’s new policy as the largest deregulatory move in American history.

Potential Impact on Pakistan and Other Nations

Climate experts have warned that if major global economies backtrack on their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the impact will be most severe on developing countries.

Pakistan, already facing the intense effects of climate change, is one of the frontline nations vulnerable to global warming. Rising temperatures, extreme rainfall, devastating floods, prolonged droughts, and rapidly melting glaciers are placing additional strain on Pakistan’s economy and agricultural systems.

Experts also warn that weaker global measures to curb carbon emissions could further impact agricultural production, food availability, and water resources, directly affecting food security in countries like Pakistan.
