A former United States ambassador to Israel has claimed that President Donald Trump may attempt to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the coming weeks, according to Israeli media reports.
Don Shapiro, who served as the US ambassador to Israel during former president Barack Obama’s administration, made the remarks in an interview with an Israeli news outlet. He alleged that President Trump is considering a move against Iran’s top leadership amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Shapiro’s comments come shortly after Iran’s Supreme Leader accused the US president of being involved in violence, protests, and killings inside Iran. Referring to Ayatollah Khamenei, Shapiro said the Iranian leader is now 86 years old and in poor health, adding that Iran “needs new leadership.”
In a separate statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the former ambassador claimed that a major US naval fleet would soon be present in the Middle East. He said the deployment would not only make a potential strike on Iran easier but also help strengthen defensive preparations in case of Iranian retaliation. He further suggested that the United States could carry out additional attacks on Iranian forces.
Iranian officials have previously warned that any attack on the Supreme Leader would be considered an act of war, with severe consequences for regional stability.
Neither the White House nor Iranian authorities have officially responded to Shapiro’s claims so far.
