WASHINGTON: planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was put on hold on Tuesday.
The move came after Moscow’s rejection of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine casting a shadow over diplomatic efforts and complicating attempts at negotiations.
A senior White House official told media, “There are no plans for President Trump to meet with President Putin in the immediate future,” following a “productive call” between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
While the call involved substantial discussions, both sides ultimately opted against arranging an in-person meeting at this time.
The postponement underscores the continuing challenges in U.S.-Russia diplomacy regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and highlights the cautious approach being taken by both parties amid rising geopolitical tensions.
