WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that ending the conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan would be a straightforward task for him.

In a briefing with journalists in the Oval Office, President Trump stated, “I prefer to stop wars. I am fully aware of the recent border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and resolving this conflict would be very easy for me.”

President Trump also revisited the topic of the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, mentioning that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had told him, “By ending the Pakistan-India conflict, I saved millions of lives.”

The tensions escalated after Pakistan faced several days of cross-border attacks originating from Afghanistan. In response, Pakistan launched operations targeting terrorist strongholds inside Afghanistan, resulting in the elimination of dozens of militants.

An initial 48-hour ceasefire was agreed upon between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban government. Today, both sides have consented to extend the ceasefire further.

British news agencies have reported that this extension will remain in effect until the ongoing negotiations in Doha between Pakistan and Afghanistan are concluded.
