U.S. resumes student visa processing with social media screening

WASHINGTON: The U.S. Department of State has announced the resumption of visa processing for international students and researchers.

However, a new requirement has been introduced: applicants must provide access to their social media accounts for screening purposes.

According to the department, consular officers will now review all social media posts and messages of applicants, particularly content that may be considered critical of the United States, its government, culture, institutions, or founding principles.

The Department of State confirmed that the suspension of student visa processing, issued in May, has been officially lifted. However, new applicants must ensure their social media accounts are set to ‘public.’ Failure to comply with this requirement may lead to the rejection of their appeal for reconsideration.

Officials also stated that the Trump administration had temporarily halted the scheduling of new visa interviews for international students last month.

At the same time, preparations were being made to enhance the screening of social media activity among applicants.
