UK asylum seeker guilty of sex assault on teenager

Case triggered nationwide protests over migrant housing.

LONDON: An Ethiopian asylum seeker has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman in Essex, a case that triggered nationwide protests over migrant housing.

Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, who arrived in Britain by small boat in July, was convicted at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on charges including sexual assault, attempted assault, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and harassment.

The assaults took place in early July, shortly after his arrival. Judge Christopher Williams said the victims’ testimony was consistent and credible.

Kebatu will be sentenced on September 23, 2025 and is expected to receive a prison term.

His arrest outside the Bell Hotel in Epping sparked protests, some of which turned violent, fueling political debate over the government’s use of hotels to house asylum seekers.
