UK govt announces major reforms to curtail immigration

LONDON: The UK government has announced sweeping reforms aimed at reducing immigration across all sectors, including work, family, and study visas.

The changes are part of a broader effort to tighten border controls and make the immigration system more selective and controlled.

Key changes include tougher English language requirements for all immigration categories, and restrictions on the recruitment of care workers from overseas.

In a significant policy shift, the eligibility period for applying for permanent residency (Indefinite Leave to Remain) will be extended from five years to ten years.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to unveil a detailed White Paper today, outlining the government’s strategy. He stated that the immigration system must be “controlled, fair, and selective” to ensure it works in the best interests of the country.

These reforms reflect the government’s commitment to regaining control over UK borders and addressing concerns about rising immigration levels.
