KIEV: Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has nominated the country’s current Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko as the new Prime Minister.
In a statement on social media, Zelenskyy announced that he had chosen Svyrydenko to lead the government and said that a new action plan from the government will be presented soon.
During a meeting with Svyrydenko, Zelenskyy discussed measures to improve the Ukrainian economy, expand aid programs for citizens, and increase local arms production.
39-year-old Yulia Svyrydenko gained international attention earlier this year when she played a key role in a minerals agreement with the United States, a deal that caused some tensions in Washington-Kyiv relations.
If the Ukrainian parliament approves her appointment, she will replace the current Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal. Svyrydenko currently serves as Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister and was appointed Economy Minister just months before the Russian invasion.
