NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over the recent U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling it a “dangerous escalation” that could push the region and the world — toward a broader conflict.

In an official statement, Guterres warned that “the risk is growing that this conflict could spiral out of control,” with devastating consequences for civilians, the Middle East, and global peace. “At this critical moment, it is essential to avoid further chaos. There is no military solution to this crisis,” he emphasized.

Guterres urged all parties to return to diplomacy, stating that “the only path forward is dialogue. The only hope is peace.”

The warning from the UN chief comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had launched targeted strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites. “There will either be peace now or a disaster for Iran,” Trump said during a press briefing.

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization confirmed that U.S. missiles targeted key nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. Iranian officials, however, claimed that the sites had been evacuated prior to the attacks, minimizing potential damage and casualties.

While no immediate reports of casualties have been released, the strikes have heightened tensions in an already volatile region. Diplomatic sources report ongoing back channel efforts to de-escalate the situation, but fears of retaliation remain high.

The international community is closely monitoring developments, with calls from several countries urging restraint and a return to negotiations under international frameworks.
