UN Experts Expose Human Rights Abuses in Occupied Kashmir

ISLAMABAD: United Nations experts have highlighted severe human rights violations and acts of brutality in Indian-administered Kashmir, calling attention to systemic oppression in the region.

According to the UN experts, extremist Hindu nationalist policies under the Modi government, along with actions by various Indian state authorities, have created a climate of fear and repression across the Kashmir Valley.

The experts expressed serious concern over the human rights situation following the Pahalgam incident, warning that India must comply with international human rights laws despite ongoing security challenges.

The UN report indicates that approximately 2,800 individuals, including journalists and human rights defenders, have been detained or arrested in the region.

The experts condemned these detentions, alleged extrajudicial killings, and discriminatory practices targeting Kashmiri and Muslim communities. They also raised concerns over restricted communication channels and curbs on press freedom.

The report further stated that hate campaigns, harassment of Muslims, demolitions, and forced deportations of nearly 1,900 individuals constitute serious violations of international law.

Many human rights defenders remain unjustly imprisoned under security laws, while India’s counterterrorism measures have contributed to social division and violence, according to the UN findings.
