UN fails in its basic mission even after 79 years

On UN Day, international peace is as elusive as it could have been eight decades back.

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations was established on October 24, 1945, when the world was reeling under the destruction of the World War II with the main mandate of restoring and promoting peace and resolve disputes among nations.

However, almost eight decades down the lane, peace in the world remains as elusive as it was eight decades ago with the fears of World War III looming on the horizon. Massacres of Palestinian people in Gaza by the brute force of Israel in complete disregard to the UN resolutions has come as a last nail in the coffin of the world body.

While the Zionist state and its backers especially the United States continued trampling the international laws and violating human rights, the UN seemed limited to making appeals for a ceasefire in Gaza. To add fuel to the fire, Israel expanded the war to Lebanon snd still not ready to stop the mayhem.

Besides Palestine, the UN has also failed miserably to resolve the longstanding issue of Jammu and Kashmir on which its Security Council had passed two resolutions decades ago but has failed to get them implemented to ensure the basic right to self determination of the people of Kashmir.

The veto power with the five permanent members of the Security Council has created a sense of alienation among other members of the UN as these major powers have used the right of veto yo protect their own vested interests.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari has reiterated Pakistan’s full support for the UN Charter and its multilateral system and said Pakistan stood ready to collaborate with all the UN Member States to achieve a peaceful and prosperous world for all.

In a message on the United Nations Day being observed on October 24, the president said today Pakistan joined the international community in commemorating the 79th United Nations (UN) Day, APP reported.
