DUBAI: India beat New Zealand by four wickets in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and picked the trophy for the third time. The Indian remained unbeatable throughout the tournament.
India were joint champions with Sri Lanka in 2002 and they lost to England in 2013. Today India and New Zealand were competing in the final of the Champions Trophy after 25 years. New Zealand defeated India by four wickets in the final of the second edition of the ICC Champions Trophy played in Nairobi 25 years ago.
In the final match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium today, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and decided to bat. The Kiwis scored 251 runs for seven wickets in the stipulated 50 overs.
The Kiwi team had to take the first loss in the form of Will Young for 57, who was sent back to the pavilion by Varun Chakravarthy, while opener Rachin Ravindra fell victim to spinner Kuldeep Yadav for 69, and Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Kane Williamson when the total score was 75.
The Kiwis suffered a fourth loss in the form of Tom Latham, who was sent back to the pavilion by Ravindra Jadeja. New Zealand’s fifth wicket against India fell for 165 when Glenn Phillips was dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy for 34. New Zealand’s sixth wicket fell for 211 when Daryl Mitchell was dismissed by Mohammed Shami for 63 runs. The seventh wicket fell on 239 runs and captain Mitchell Santner was run out by eight runs.
India got off to a steady start in the chase with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill stitching a 105-run partnership. Virat Kohli scored one run, Hardik Pandya 18 and Axar Patel 29, Shreyas Iyer 48 runs and KL Rahul remained not out on 34 runs.
For New Zealand, Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell took 2 wickets each.
