UNITED NATIONS: The First Committee of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly has adopted four resolutions tabled by Pakistan.

The Main Committee of the General Assembly, dealing with disarmament and international security, unanimously adopted Pakistan’s two resolutions entitled “Regional Disarmament” and “Confidence-Building Measures in the Regional and Subregional Contexts.”

Pakistan’s other two resolutions, entitled “Conclusion of Effective International Arrangements to Assure Non-Nuclear-Weapon States Against the Use or Threat of Use of Nuclear Weapons” and “Conventional Arms Control at the Regional and Subregional Levels,” were adopted by the First Committee with an overwhelming majority of Member States.

For decades, Pakistan has led initiatives in the United Nations to advance priority issues of nuclear disarmament, regional disarmament, conventional arms control, and confidence-building measures (CBMs).

The adoption of these resolutions reaffirms the international community’s recognition of the importance of “negative security assurances,” as well as the value of regional approaches to disarmament and arms control.

Pakistan will continue its efforts at the United Nations and other relevant multilateral bodies, including the Conference on Disarmament, the United Nations Disarmament Commission, and the General Assembly’s First Committee.
