UNICEF Delegation Visits KP to Boost Child Protection Efforts

PESHAWAR: A delegation from UNICEF visited the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection and Welfare Commission (KPCPWC) to review ongoing initiatives and strengthen collaboration aimed at improving child protection systems across the province.

The delegation included Jennifer Melton, Chief of Child Protection at UNICEF Pakistan, and Bushra Ajmal, Head of Child Protection in Peshawar. During their visit, they held a series of meetings and field engagements in Peshawar.

The visit began with a meeting with Social Welfare Secretary Sharif Hussain, where discussions focused on enhancing coordination mechanisms, strengthening institutional responses, and advancing joint programmes in the child protection sector.

Later, the delegation visited Village Council Badizai, where a Broad-Based Community Meeting was held to establish Community-Based Child Protection Committees under the Child Friendly Communities Initiatives (CFCIs), a UNICEF-supported programme. Community members, including adolescents, participated actively, emphasizing the importance of grassroots involvement in safeguarding children.

At the KPCPWC office, Additional Chief Ijaz Muhammad Khan delivered a detailed briefing on the commission’s achievements, ongoing projects, and progress at the field level. He also highlighted operational challenges and areas requiring further technical support.

The delegation commended the efforts of KPCPWC and reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting stronger child protection systems in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The visit concluded with both sides expressing a shared commitment to deepening collaboration to ensure the safety and well-being of children throughout the province.
