India fails to get choice statement from UNSC on Pahalgam incident

Pakistan successfully ensured mention of "Jammu and Kashmir" in statement of condemnation.

NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) condemned the recent incident in the occupied Kashmir region of Pahalgam; however, India’s demand for a strongly worded statement was rejected.

Thanks to Pakistan’s effective diplomacy, India failed to secure a statement similar in tone to the one issued after the Pulwama attack.

Moreover, Pakistan successfully ensured that “Jammu and Kashmir” was mentioned in the statement, whereas India had lobbied for the inclusion of “Pahalgam” to imply that occupied Kashmir was fully integrated into Indian territory.

It is worth noting that the attack in Pahalgam took place on April 22, but India was unable to secure an immediate condemnation from the Security Council. The statement was eventually issued four days later, on April 26.

A UN official stated that the organization is closely monitoring the situation in the region with deep concern and urged both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation.

Pakistani diplomatic sources have hailed this development as a major success and asserted that Pakistan will continue to defend its stance effectively at international forums in the future.
