NEW YORK: Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council to prioritize action against terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.
The 15-member council has unanimously adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year, an initial draft of which was prepared and presented by China and Pakistan.
Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, said in his address that the Taliban government had not been effective in eliminating ISIS. It has tolerated many other terrorist groups and is involved in cross-border attacks against Pakistan along with outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade.
The envoy highlighted the attack by BLA and Majeed Brigade on a passenger train in Balochistan last week in which terrorists took hundreds of passengers hostage and killed 25 innocent people.
The envoy told the Security Council that the terrorists were in constant contact with their “handlers” in Afghanistan during the attack.
“From where the attack was planned and directed, there is evidence that the attack was launched and funded by our primary adversary through its Afghan proxies,” he added..
He said that these terrorist attacks are clearly being carried out to destabilize Pakistan and especially to hinder Pakistan’s cooperation with China and CPEC.
