US again asks for probe into election irregularities in Pakistan

Spokesperson says such allegations cannot be ignored in any democracy.

WASHINGTON: The United States has once again asked for a proper investigation into irregularities in the recent elections held in Pakistan.

During his press briefing here, State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller said the US takes such allegations seriously and Washington has already asked for a proper investigation into the irregularities along with our partner such the European Union.

He said such allegations in any democratic country cannot be ignored in order to ensure public mandate us respected for rule of law and promotion of democracy.

The spokesperson also said that the US wants a democratically elected government in Pakistan. We are eager too to work with the new government in Islamabad.

It may be mentioned here that the EU and Australia as well as the UN chief have also expressed concerns over rigging and irregularities in the elections in Pakistan.

For the first time in the history, a number of candidates declared as winner have refused to accept the results and said according to the records of the polling stations they had lost the elections.

Meanwhile, protests by different political parties against the irregularities continued Balochistan abd other parts of the country.
