UNITED NATIONS: The United States and Bahrain have submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council calling for an immediate end to attacks and disruptions targeting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to diplomatic sources, the draft resolution urges Iran to halt all alleged attacks, threats, and interference with commercial and cargo vessels passing through the strategic waterway.

Bahrain’s UN envoy, Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, said the Strait of Hormuz is vital not only for the Gulf region but also for global trade and energy supply chains.

The draft also raises concerns over reports of naval mines and alleged illegal toll collection from ships operating in the area.

Speaking at the Council, US Ambassador Mike Waltz accused Iran of attempting to exert control over maritime traffic through what he described as a “Straits Authority,” and said such actions undermine freedom of navigation.

He further stated that the international community must take a clear position on maritime security in the Gulf region.

The United Arab Emirates also expressed concern, saying rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are directly affecting global trade and energy markets.

However, the resolution faces strong opposition from Russia and China, making the possibility of a veto highly likely.

In response, Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeed Iravani rejected the draft as “one-sided and politically motivated,” accusing Washington of using maritime security as a pretext to advance its own strategic interests in the region.

He added that the United States is attempting to legitimize what Tehran considers unlawful actions in the Gulf region.

The Security Council is expected to continue discussions as diplomatic divisions deepen over the issue.
