Mid-Air Threat Forces Emergency Maneuvers
Police Commissioner Chester Williams stated that the suspect suddenly pulled a knife mid-flight and demanded an escape from Belize.
Authorities identified him as Akinyela Sawa Taylor, a U.S. citizen with a military background. As the situation escalated, the aircraft began circling dangerously low on fuel.
Violent Hijacking Leaves Multiple Injured
During the altercation, Taylor stabbed three people, including the pilot and a passenger.
In a swift response, the injured passenger, who carried a licensed firearm, shot Taylor as the plane landed near Belize City.
Emergency Landing Ends in Fatality
Medical teams rushed both Taylor and the wounded passenger to the hospital.
Despite efforts to save him, Taylor died shortly after due to the gunshot wound, officials confirmed.
Weak Airstrip Security Under Scrutiny
Following the incident, Commissioner Williams acknowledged serious gaps in security at Belize’s smaller airstrips. He explained that these locations lack thorough passenger screening, which likely allowed Taylor to board with a knife.
Moreover, officials disclosed that Taylor had been denied entry into Belize just days earlier.
Notably, the plane was scheduled for a short domestic route from Corozal, near the Mexico-Belize border, to San Pedro.
U.S. Embassy Joins Investigation Efforts
In response to the hijacking, Belizean police reached out to the U.S. Embassy for assistance with the ongoing investigation.
Embassy spokesperson Luke Martin noted that officials had not yet determined Taylor’s motives or full background.
Taylor’s Background Revealed
According to airport records, Taylor previously worked in the U.S. as a teacher and football coach.
He was formerly affiliated with McCluer North High School in Florissant, Missouri.
However, school staff confirmed he no longer held a position there.
