US embassy breaks silence over ambassador’s GB visit

Statement says Donald Blome was in Gilgit and Hunza to explore opportunities for strenthening the area's climate resilience.

ISLAMABAD: The US embassy in Islamabad has clarified that a recent visit to Gilgit-Baltistan by Ambassador Donald Blome was aimed at exploring opportunities for strenthening the area’s climate resilience.

Ambassador Blome was in GB for six days during which he visited Gilgit city and Hunza and met with local people.

However, the region’s opposition leader expressed concerns over what he termed the US ambassador’s ‘mysterious activities’.

Mr Blome concluded his six-day visit to GB on Sunday.

Neither the US embassy nor the region’s government issued any details or inform the media about the visit of the ambassador to Gilgit-Baltistan, raising many eyebrows.

Kazim Mesum, the opposition leader GB legislative assembly, during question  hours in the house said that the mysterious activities of the US ambassador in the region had raised questions. He said the local government was not aware of the visit.

“There is a set procedure for any country’s ambassador to visit the region,” he said.

Mr Blome a few days earlier had visited the Gwadar port city, where China is executing infrastructure projects as part of CPEC.

The opposition leader said visits to the two most vital areas of CPEC were part of “the US’ CPEC containment policy”.
