WASHINGTON: The United States has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for thousands of nationals from Afghanistan and Cameroon, citing improved conditions in their home countries.
According to a statement by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Afghan and Cameroonian nationals no longer require protection under TPS, which shields individuals from deportation due to ongoing armed conflict or environmental disasters in their countries of origin.
The decision will affect approximately 14,600 Afghans residing in the U.S., who will lose their protected status in May 2025. Similarly, around 8,000 Cameroonian nationals will see their TPS end in June.
TPS is a humanitarian program that allows nationals of designated countries to live and work in the U.S. temporarily when returning home would pose a threat to their safety.
