US Fighter Jet Shot Down Over Iran, Search Underway for Crew

WASHINGTON: A U.S. fighter jet was shot down over Iran on Friday, and a search-and-rescue operation is underway for the two crew members, U.S. officials said. This is the first known loss of a U.S. aircraft since the conflict began nearly five weeks ago.

The aircraft has been identified as an F-15 fighter jet. Images shared on social media and analyzed by experts show wreckage consistent with an F-15E Strike Eagle, which carries two crew members.

Iranian officials have asked civilians to report any sightings of the crew and have shared images of the wreckage online. Local authorities in Iran said anyone who captures or kills the crew would be “specially commended,” according to Iran’s semi-official news agency ISNA.

So far, 13 U.S. military personnel have been killed and more than 300 wounded in the conflict. No U.S. troops have been taken prisoner. Intelligence reports indicate Iran still maintains significant missile and drone capabilities despite U.S. attacks.

President Donald Trump has threatened extensive strikes on Iran’s infrastructure and energy facilities. Public opinion in the United States shows most Americans want a quick end to the conflict, even if it means not achieving all the administration’s objectives.–Reuters
