US lifts most sanctions on Syria, Trump signs executive order

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has officially lifted most American sanctions on Syria by signing a new executive order, paving the way for renewed global trade with the country, according to US officials.

American media reports that while most economic sanctions have been removed, restrictions will remain in place against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, ISIS, and Iranian-backed groups.

Trump had announced his intention to lift the sanctions during his recent Middle East visit.

These sanctions were originally imposed during Bashar al-Assad’s rule and expanded in 2004 and 2011, when Syria was designated a state sponsor of terrorism.

However, relations between the US and Syria have improved since Assad was removed from power last December.

Sanctions will continue to target Assad, his allies, and individuals implicated in human rights violations, while the new Syrian government will be free to reengage in international trade.
