WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has canceled his visit to India in light of the trade tensions between Washington and New Delhi, according to an American newspaper.
Sources familiar with the US President’s travel schedule have stated that President Trump does not plan to visit India this year. Neither American nor Indian officials have confirmed or denied the claims made by the newspaper.
Trump was scheduled to visit India for this year’s Quad Summit. It’s important to note that the foreign ministers of the US, India, Japan, and Australia held a meeting earlier this year in January in the United States. The Quad summit, seen as a strategic alignment to counter China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region, was expected to be a major diplomatic event.
Relations between the US and India have been on a downward trajectory in recent months. While both countries have shared interests in maintaining peace and stability in the region, their trade relations have been strained. India’s failure to finalize a trade deal with the US has led President Trump to impose a 50% tariff on Indian products. The trade friction has added fuel to the fire, with both sides unable to reach a consensus on key issues.
Additionally, Trump has periodically referenced his role in the ongoing Pakistan-India conflict, especially in the context of Kashmir. His comments have raised concerns in New Delhi, which has repeatedly rejected any external mediation in the matter. This has led to further tensions, as the situation continues to unfold in the region.
