WASHINGTON: The US Senate has passed a major bill imposing further sanctions on Russia and Iran, while giving President Donald Trump the authority to impose additional tariffs of up to 100 percent on India and other countries that continue purchasing Russian energy products.
The bill, titled the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, was approved by the Senate by 86 votes to 11. It will now move to the House of Representatives for consideration before it can take effect.
Under the bill, President Donald Trump would have the authority to impose additional tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that continue buying Russian oil, gas or other key energy products.
India, China, Japan and some European countries could potentially be affected by the measure.
However, the 100 percent tariffs have not been imposed on these countries immediately, and the president would have to decide whether to exercise the authority granted under the legislation.
