WASHINGTON: USAID Administrator Samantha Power has stressed the importance of protecting Afghan refugees and asylum seekers in Pakistan as the country starts a crackdown to repatriate over a million Afghans which it says are undocumented.
In a telephonic conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani, Power explained how the United States and Pakistan can work together to facilitate the safe, expeditious and efficient resettlement and relocation of eligible individuals to the US, according to spokesperson Jessica Jennings.
The deadline set for the illegal foreigners living in Pakistan ended on October 31 after which Islamabad plans to evict all those living in the country without proper documentation.
The two sides also discussed USAID’s work in Pakistan on post-flood recovery, climate change, and broader efforts under the U.S.-Pakistan Green Alliance.
They also discussed the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and efforts of the U.S. and other countries to provide life-saving food, water, medical care, and other critical assistance to civilians in need.
